Kani Doraku (蟹道樂)

The restaurant with the giant moving crab is probably the one of the most iconic restaurants in Osaka. Specialising in crab dishes, we visited Kani Douraku's (蟹道樂) original/main store in Dotonbori (道頓堀) as it was the closest one to our Airbnb, but there are apparently 4 other stores in the same area. We didn't make a prior booking, but we put our names down while we were in the area at noon for a 6:00pm reservation the same day.

Sharon and I both ordered mochizuki (望月) set from the kani suki (crab hot pot) course meal for ¥7,600 (each)—making it the most expensive single meal we had in Japan. The set included: boiled crab, raw crab, snow crab (grilled), kani suki (crab hot pot), zosui (rice porridge), Japanese pickle vegetables and fruit.

The meal was, no doubt, a little on the pricey side. However, it wasn't as good as I had expected for its cost. The crab itself was sweet and fresh, but I just felt that whole meal overall was quite average. I think fact that everything was made with crab was really what made it "special". That being said, a full crab course meal, from Kani Doraku or not, is definitely worth a try because it's not something that's commonly found, and for me, it's not a meal that can be experienced close to home.
