Sydney Cherry Blossom Festival 2017

Wednesday, 23 August 2017

Until I see cherry blossoms in Japan, the ones at the Auburn Botanic Gardens will have to do for now. I've never seen cherry blossoms (or plum blossoms) in real life before, so I didn't really know what to expect in such a small place. The flowers are said to bloom only once a year for about 2 weeks, with the Sydney Cherry Blossom Festival 2017 taking place from Friday, 18 August to Sunday, 27 August 2017, so we went to see the cherry blossoms on the first week on Sunday, 20 August 2017.

Either we picked the wrong day or everyone had the same idea, but when we arrived at the Garden, it was packed with people. The first thing that came to my mind was one of those "expectations vs. reality" memes because as you can see in my photo above, we could barely take any photos without being photobombed by a crowd in the back.

But rather than changing our initial plans, we still decided to have a picnic at the Garden since each of us had brought some food to share. We sat near the pond in the Japanese Garden which luckily, wasn't too crowded.

Despite being scattered around the Garden, the cherry blossoms really met my expectations and were absolutely beautiful to look at. I particularly loved the lines of trees in the "Garden of a Thousand Views" (千景の庭園) because its canopy-like overhang. It was only a short path (a couple of metres really), but it was the most difficult place to walk because everyone a photo there. They even had 2 security guards there telling people to "move along".

At the festival, there was also a pop-up izakaya and multiple food trucks selling a range of Japanese food such as takoyaki, gyoza, bao buns, and bento boxes at what they called the "The Japanese Food Village". We were still full from our lunch, so we just bought ourselves some takoyaki to end our day at the Botanic Gardens. The takoyaki had too much flour for my liking, but they were quite filling and definitely satisfied my craving for them. I had three and couldn't eat anymore (haha).
