Dongdaemun (동대문)

More commonly known as a fashion town, Dongdaemun (동대문) is a shopping paradise for those who are serious about shopping. It's the largest wholesale market and shopping district in Korea, and most shops are open from 10:30am in the morning and close at 5:00am the next day. (Talk about long hours!) In fact, many clothes you can find in places like Myeongdong (명동) and Hongdae (홍대) all source their clothes from Dongdaemun because it apparently sells every fashion item you can imagine.

The shops mainly consists of retail stores such as: MaxStyle, Goodmorning City, Hello apM, Migliore, and Doota. (I don't know what it never occurred to me to take photos of them.) I managed to buy a few shirts and coats here and there (mainly from Migliore and Hello apM), but not much—the fact there were so many things got really overwhelming. Plus, I wanted summer clothes and they were mostly selling thick winter coats and knits (sigh).

We had our first food court meal in Dongdaemun—more specifically, on Level 7 of Doota. We ordered: pork chops, Korean blood sausage (soondae 순대), army base stew (budae jjigae 부대찌개) and kimchi fried rice (kimchi bokkeumbap 김치볶음밥). Overall, the food wasn't amazing, but I think it was pretty good for a food court. However, what I loved the most was how big the servings were because we would never get that kind of size of a meal in Sydney (at least not in the city).

While we were there, Doosan (or Doota) was holding a Winter Campaign called "Our People, Our Tomorrow", where you could write a message on the postcard provided and have it sent to your "loved ones" for free. My sister actually sent one back home, curious to see if we would receive it when we returned by to Sydney—and we did! We got it in about 2 weeks. A postcard isn't a lot, but I still think it's a really heart-warming campaign, especially for those with family living in another country. #welldonedoosan
