Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DPP) (동대문디자인플라자)

A trip to Dongdaemun (동대문) isn't complete without a visit to the Dongdaemun Design Plaza or DPP (동대문디자인플라자), one of Seoul's latest iconic landmarks and newest city centre for design, fashion and art. Although we didn't actually do much while we were there, I think it was one of most favourite attractions the city has to offer. (My design flair talking here.)

Inaugurated in March 2014, the spaceship-like DPP is an absolutely stunning piece of architecture. If you're not interested in the traditional landmarks like the palaces, and prefer modern architecture and contemporary design, I highly recommend going to the DPP. The futuristic building looks good during the day, but even better at night. Fun fact: the exterior of the building is made of 45,133 aluminium panels, none of which are the same shape.

We didn't actually manage to go inside the DPP where the exhibitions were held, but we did walk through the Design Market and hang around the entrance of the Museum, which had a really fun, interactive artwork that even served as a seat!

But as if the main buildings wasn't beautiful enough, the DPP is currently holding a semi-permanent LED Rose Garden exhibit on the Grass Garden area next to the DDP Dongdaemun History & Culture Park and Yigansu Exhibition Hall. On display until 29 February 2016, the exhibition comprises of 25,550 electronic roses brightly lit and spread out over quite a distance. The reason behind the number "25,550" is to celebrate the 70th year anniversary of the Korean Independence Day (365 days x 70 years = 25,550).

I recently finished watching the drama "She Was Pretty" (그녀는 예뻤다) starring Hwang Jung Eum, Park Seo Joon and Choi Siwon and I noticed that they filmed at the DPP (LED Rose Garden) as well. Also, I feel like "Running Man" (런닝맨) is due to film at the DPP any time now.

The DPP is a romantic place for couples, but it was just as impressive to a photo-enthusiast like me—in fact, it was breathtaking. Located in an area that is open all night, it's a landmark that really stands out and is totally worth the stop to see.
