You Are Here Café & Eat Your Kimchi Studio

Sunday, 28 February 2016

As my sister and I are huge fans of Simon and Martina, we had to visit their café while were in Hongdae (홍대). The café is called "You Are Here" and its owned jointly by Eat Your Kimchi and Talk To Me In Korean. (I actually relied on TTMIK's "Survival Korean" book for this trip!)

The interiors was simple, but with a lot of character. It wasn't as comfortable as I had imagined it to be, but the fact that this café doubles up as a classroom to learn Korean and a space where people can meet up and exchange languages makes it one of a kind. If you're interested, you can even buy some Talk To Me In Korean textbooks and Eat Your Kimchi merchandise at the counter. I wanted to buy a Meemers' mug, but it was all sold out. But Shirley did buy the "Men Like Cake Too" mug with Simon's face on it though!

Just as you enter the café, you'll also notice a big, bright yellow booth to your left. It's called "Speaker's Corner", where you can record a video message of yourself in response to the question being asked and be given a chance to feature in one of their videos on YouTube. We didn't record anything because I didn't want be on camera (heh).

We ordered the: green tea latte, sweet potato latte, hot Americano and a piece of green tea roll cake with cream and red bean filling. The reason why I get Americano so often is because most cafés offer the drink with a piece of cake as a combo and usually at a lower price. (Plus, it's coffee with the least amount of calories—what's not to like?) However, the drink I enjoyed the most was the sweet potato latte.

Located in a residential area of the suburb, You Are Here Café had super chill and friendly atmosphere, making it a really nice place for quiet study or for people to hang out. However, I can't say that I loved the place because I personally like more refined interiors while the café had more of a trendy and grungy look instead.

While were were in Hongdae, we also decided to visit the Eat Your Kimchi studio. I'm really glad we went because Simon and Martina have left for Japan already! Sadly, we didn't bump into either of them (outside the studio or the café), but it was still nice seeing both locations in person.
