Vivid Sydney 2015

Wednesday, 10 June 2015

Inaugurated in 2009, Vivid Sydney is no doubt one of Sydney's most iconic annual events. As a celebration of light, music and ideas, the 3 elements are not only amalgamated to beautifully illuminate various buildings and landmarks, it also transforms the city into an "outdoor night time canvas of art".

While 2015 marks the event's 7th return, it's actually my first year attending. I don't remember it being so popular back in 2009 or 2010, but when it did become a major event, I couldn't find the time to attend simply because May-June is exam period. Last year, I vowed to go matter what—and I did, on Saturday night: 6 June 2015.

I only stopped by Martin Place and The Rocks, but I was happy with what I saw. A little disappointed overall, but still hopeful for what it can bring to us next year.

I was really disappointed with the lights on the Opera House. Was it always so dimly lit? The photographs some people take and the poster made it look so bright! (How deceiving.) I had to lower my shutter speed to 0.4 seconds to get a decent shot! (I feel sorry for people using their phone cameras because they had no chance!) Here are my results below—I'm not too happy with them because, even with a tripod, most of them turned out blurry. #tryagainnextyear

The reason why I like this event so much is because it showcases how beautiful Sydney can be. It's not an event for tourists only, but something us Sydneysiders can enjoy too. Your average joe might not be excited about artworks hanging in a museum, but most people can appreciate, at the very least, colourful artworks that are interactive and projected on familiar structures that represent home.
