Review: Biotherm Life Plankton Essence

Saturday, 18 April 2015

My skin has always felt very moisturised without any foundation on my face, but when I do have it on, I get these dry patches on my cheeks where my freckles are concentrated. I've tried changing foundations, moisturisers, serums, essences and even sunscreens, but haven't had any luck. I then discovered Biothem Life Plankton Essence, and it has been life-changing.

The Life Plankton Essence is infused with a miracle skin renewing treatment known as "Life Plankton", a micro-organism with extraordinary regenerative properties. It is actively concentrated as a serum, yet as lightweight as a cosmetic water for maximum absorption and deep-working effectiveness.

I first saw this product on PONY's video about dry skin. She used it twice (i.e., on two different types of dry skin), so I wanted to give it a try. Mind you, I still couldn't figure out what type of dry skin I had even after watching the video, but the Essence seemed like a pretty good all-rounder to me. I tried reading up on other people's reviews to give me a better idea of how well it worked, but there weren't many about 3-4 months ago. Luckily, the ones that were online were mostly positive.

I bought mine in Hong Kong for HKD$470 (about $77). I didn't buy it when I first saw it because of it's price tag, but I eventually caved in by the time we left because: one, it had good reviews; and two, Beauty Avenue was right next to the hotel I was staying at and I wouldn't know where to buy it in Sydney should I decide to buy it later.

Now that I'm back home and have been using it everyday for about 2 months or so (you can see I've used about one-third of the bottle already), I can confidently say that I do not regret my purchase at all. Biothem claims that "in 8 days see and feel a new-born skin", and while I don't agree with the last part of the statement, I do with the first part—I could see and feel changes within the first few days. Biotherm also asserts that the product has the following benefits:

  • Skin looks brighter (more radiant);
  • Fine lines are less visible;
  • Evens out skin tone;
  • Skin feels smoother;
  • Skin is hydrated and more dewy;
  • Skin is more resilient and firm;
  • Skin feels soothed immediately; and
  • Skin feels softer.

It doesn't brighten nor even out my skin tone, but it definitely hydrates it—which was my main concern when I bought it anyways because I wanted to target the dryness of my skin. Now, my nose rarely flakes and my cheeks don't look blotchy with foundation and powder on top. I also love how it keeps my skin feeling supple, soft and smooth.

Now for the breakdown. It's suitable for all skin types and would cost you about $67-80 depending on where you buy it (and taking into account exchange rates). Tinted with a beautiful blue gradient design, the 125ml bottle is not very travel friendly because it's a glass bottle with a twist on cap. (Is there travel size for this?) The product smells fresh and coral-like, but it doesn't linger and disappears after a minute or so. Use after toner and shake well before use. I pour about 2-3 drops onto my palm and rub it in before patting it all over my face.

I wasn't actually going to review this product because if I knew that I was, I would've taken photos of it when it was full, But I think it's something worth sharing because it's the ONLY skincare product I've used that I absolutely LOVE. Now want to try other Biotherm products and see how well it performs. #theregoesallmymoney
