G.E.M. X.X.X. Live World Tour - Sydney Concert

Saturday, 13 September 2014

Shortly after JJ Lin's concert here in May, G.E.M. (鄧紫棋) was the next artist to perform in Sydney as part of her X.X.X. Live World Tour. I don't call myself a fan, but I do enjoy listening to her songs because she's the only female Hong Kong singer whose songs actually sound good! Plus, I think she has one of the most powerful vocals in the Chinese music industry.

I went with my sister Annie and we bought the $138 tickets, sitting in Section 4 about 5 rows up from the front. When we got to our seats, I was really surprised at how close we were to the stage and how I was able to get some pretty good shots with my 55-250mm lens.

The first song G.E.M. sang was "After Tonight", which is one of my most favourite songs from her "Xposed" album. It has an upbeat tune so it immediately got everyone perked up and excited for the show. But overall, I think the audience was most attentive during the songs which showcased her powerhouse vocals like "泡沫" (Bubble) and "你把我灌醉" (Intoxicated). For songs that were less popular, the crowd was energetic but remained somewhat reserved at the same time.

I wasn't disappointed at all with G.E.M.'s singing, but I was a bit disappointed with her choice of songs. She only sang a few of her own songs like "等一個他" (Waiting For Him), "回憶的沙漏" (Hourglass), and A.I.N.Y. (愛你), and but not songs like "Where Did You Go" or "All About You" that made her famous. The concert mainly consisted of songs from the reality singing competition "I Am A Singer" (我是歌手) which she took part in earlier this year, so it was basically a recap of her performances on the show. Unfortunately, I didn't watch any episodes except for some short clips here and there, so I wasn't familiar with like a quarter of the songs she sang that night.

G.E.M. changed quite a few outfits that night, but my favourite one was definitely the long red dress pictured below—she looked absolutely STUNNING—and the stage lighting was also really good and harmonised well with her performances.

Whenever I go to Chinese concert, we're usually given free blow-up light sticks to cheer on the artist who is performing. But for some strange reason, we were never given any this time so it looked really bad on our part as an audience. Only the fans in the "Party Zone" had some sort of light sticks, but it was basically a "black ocean" everywhere else. Fortunately, a lot of us used the flashlights on our phones to show our support and it looked really beautiful—almost like stars. The good thing was that G.E.M. really liked it as well!

G.E.M. may not be someone who's constantly praised by the media, but you cannot deny that she's got good voice—that's what I went for, and that's what I got. Maybe that's why I enjoyed her concert so much because I was quite chill about attending and didn't think too much about it. (I hate it how the more I like an artist, the more nervous I get!) If G.E.M. comes to Sydney again, I definitely wouldn't mind seeing her perform live a second time. (Hopefully she'll be singing songs from her own albums!)
